Stephane Grappelli - A Life in Jazz

(original hardback title ‘Stephane Grappelli - With and Without Django’ – same text new title paperback under new publisher!) – The Official Biography.

If anybody ever defined jazz it’s Stephane because it flowed from him. It wasn’t anything you learnt in a manual; it was an instinct." - Michael Parkinson

He’s got such an infinite charm in his playing … he’s got that kind of timeless feel. He was the style of music." - Nigel Kennedy

... diligent research … has thrown new light on Grappelli's  extraordinary childhood …  his music remains clearly in focus throughout." - Alyn Shipton JAZZWISE

He was a one-off. I don’t know that you’ll ever hear or see that again. It’s like Duke Ellington, you know. He was so unique and so gifted and he commanded respect. He had the best ballad-playing sense of the violin that I know of. There was grace to his playing that is seldom found in many other so-called ballad players in the jazz world." - Oscar Peterson

Stéphane Grappelli:

From his early days in Paris, where his precocious talents led him to study with the great Isadora Duncan and following the tragic early death of his mother, he displayed the grit and determination that would propel him to the stages of venues around the world. But his desperately impoverished upbringing on the Parisian streets never let him forget his beginnings, and his characteristic humility remained with him until his death in 1997.

Grappelli’s career spanned nearly 80 years and saw him perform with the great names in jazz, including Duke Ellington, Martin Taylor and Joe Venuti. But it is his performances with Django Reinhardt, his lifelong friend, for which he is perhaps best remembered. Together, the pair cut a swathe through the embryonic world of music recording, building a legacy that would outlive them both.

Containing exclusive interviews with Stéphane and previously unpublished photographs, Stéphane Grappelli: ‘A Life in Jazz’ is a slice of music history and a fitting testament to a man who revolutionised his world.
