Django Reinhardt - gypsy genius
Probably Stéphane's most famous musical collaboration remains that with Django starting in 1931 and ending in the 1950s.
3 chapters of the main DVD address this 'stop start' relationship.
Beginning at Le Croix de Sud and a meeting at a gypsy camp, covering the 'Delaunay's Jazz' demo discs, The Hot Club Quintet, Bricktops, British tours, the second world war separation, Les Marseilles reunion recording, the Ellington tour including a rare letter from Django and Django's sudden and untimely death in 1953.
Exclusively on the 2nd DVD bonus chapters include 'meeting Django' - told from the perspective of bass player Coleridge Goode (1946 - the Caribbean Club, London), recording
Nuages (Abbey Road Studios 1946) and the complete 'Jazz Hot' newsreel clip including 'J'attendrai' - available at last following 5 long years of litigation and piracy. Also on the bonus disc the complete Django letter (full screen 4 pages) with details of Django's USA adventures with the Duke.
As far as can be ascertained the DVD contains all known footage of Stéphane and Django as well as 2 clips of Django with other groups:-
The familiar 'electric guitar' clip has been extended by creative editing giving we hope, some impression of Djangos success with the 'new' instrument (contrary to some reports).
The 'train' clip has also been extended and re-synced to Manoir de mes Rêves. The editor for all these clips is also a guitarist and has painstakingly reconstructed the mute source film. The electric guitar clip is synced to a rare Django/ Ellington live session. We hope you enjoy these precious glimpses of the gypsy
genius available at last from a single legitimate source in a digital form.
